The Dirty Glass

I remember when, as a child, my mom first explained to me the concept of optimism and pessimism. It was clear, even then, that optimism was not the way I was naturally inclined. She held up a glass with water and asked me to describe it--you guessed it, I saw it as half empty. But as I've grown, I realize that it's not about whether the glass is half full or half empty. Eventually, the water will be emptied from the glass and someone is going to have to wash it. And I HATE washing dishes. So when I look at it, all I see is a dirty glass.
